Richard Steven (Rick) York VIEW PROFILE

Richard Steven York set sail with the boatman on the early morning of December 3rd, 2023. He passed into this journey from the warmth of his home where he resided with his loving wife, and best friend, Nina York. He was with family during his last hours. In those moments, despite his suffering and physical weakness, Richard found the strength to continue to give his love and tenacity to family. This strength will be given again and used throughout time.

Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby W. York, and sister, Deborah Y. Willard. He is survived by his wife Nina York and two sons, Jason (Sarah) and Philip (eljana) York; and grandson Pavle York. Richard is also survived by sisters, Carlotta Y Clark (Ron) and Tammy D York; brother, David B York (Shelia); sister-in-law, Emma Ruth Shomaker and numerous nephews and nieces.

Known by most of his family and friends as "Rick," he lived a beautiful and poetic life. He was hilariously comedic. Even into his journey with death, he maintained his sense of humor that would have nurses and family holding their bellies laughing. He had many talents such as carpentry, painting, sculpture, poetry, and beyond. He created lots of art that family will continue to enjoy. Richard touched many lives with his love and compassion. He expected the best out of people, as he did himself, but always appreciated the individuality of others. He would often say, "Character is built when no one is watching."

Rick coached many kids in football. He gave to those in need. He would offer kindness, help, and compassion to a complete stranger. He saw the world, the universe, in its colorful complexity and the mysteries that abound. He would often turn his eyes to the stars, intrigued at the marvelous expanse- his wonder to what scientific frontier would be next. Rick loved life. He showed that every day through his intensity for it and his unmatched dedication to his family. He broke the mold from how he was raised, by doing better and not simply settling for what was given to him.

Rick was a loyal husband to Nina for 50 years. There was no horror, or pain, that he would not endure for his sons and grandson. Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late; And how can man die better than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his Gods."

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Richard's memory to the Crossnore Communities For Children at 1001 Reynolda Rd NW, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or by following this link: https:// www.crossnore.org/donate-now/.

I remember Richard fondly. He was always very kind and had a great smile. I cannot believe that he and Debbie  passed within days of each other. Prayers for his family during this most difficult time.
