Olon "Coach" Shuler VIEW PROFILE

Mr. L. Olon Shuler, 77, passed away January 20, 2022. He was born September 13, 1944, in Winston-Salem to Lester and Alice Shuler. Mr. Shuler graduated from Gray High School in 1962. He then graduated from Appalachian State in 1966, where he played baseball and earned a full scholarship in basketball. After college, he began teaching and coaching in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system.

Mr. Shuler was known throughout the area as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at North Forsyth High School from 1974-1990. Winning numerous titles and championships as well as five Frank Spencer titles. He had over 30 young men play basketball collegiately. Mr. Shuler was inducted into North Forsyth and Winston-Salem Halls of Fame. He retired in 1996. Mr. Shuler was an active life-long member of Home Moravian Church.

He was married to his wife, Sydney in 1991. They spent 30 plus glorious years together. She was an artist, poet and theologian with a passion for gardening. They went to be with their Lord and Savior a few days apart.

He is survived by his children, Christina Elmore Parrish, Richard Elmore, and Brian Elmore; and his grandchildren, Anna, Alex and Ethan. He is also survived by his three sisters, Alice Hege, Linda Davis, and Beverly Davis. He was also a father to over 200 young men who called him "Coach".

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Home Moravian Church (mask are required) with the Rev. Ginny Tobiassen officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Salem Funeral Home 120 S. Main Street from 9:00 a.m. and ends promptly at 12:00 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to North Forsyth High School basketball program 5705 Shattalon Dr. Winston-Salem NC 27105.
