I am so deeply moved to hear of Alvin's passing. He was one of my best childhood friends having grown up less than half a mile away. We spent many days and evening as part of a close knit group of wondering warriors in the Phafftown/ Old Town communities. From Sports to Church to mischief we grew up and came of age through all the rights of passage that young men of our generation pushed through. From Old Town Elementary to Mount Tabor Jr Sr to North Forsyth and beyond. I spent many nights at his house and shared many meals with his family.. I alway felt that Alvin never quite recovered from the lose of his father and rightly so. His dad AT was a pillar in the home and community. As years passed we lost touch but I would hear things and longed to reconnect with my trusted sidekick. I was heartbroken when about seven years ago I was in town visiting my mom and on a whim rode past his original childhood home where I had heard he was living. I pulled into the driveway and a figure appeared on the porch. I called his name , he cautiously approached the car and we chatted for a few minutes. To me surprise he didn't remember me. Words were awkward and  few and we said goodbye and wished each other well. He stopped me and approached the car. He asked me if I would keep him in my prayers. I assured him I would. That was the last time I saw or spoke to Alvin. Ironically I was in Winston last week and slowly rode past his home again. No car in the driveway. Be at peace Alvin. I'll alway love you like a brother. May you find rest in God's tender mercy.

Thanks for sharing Jonny.  Very moving.  Alvin was a swell pal in gallantry and mischief.

Alvin was and will always be one of those friends that was an indelible part of the formative years for many of us. Jonny ... you found the perfect description for Alvin ... "mischief."   Although my times of mischief are fewer and farther between now ... I know who taught me.

Dirk !  "Gallantry", now that is the word. What Alvin lacked in stature he more than made up for with tenacity. He was always the first in line for a challenge.
